Hello,
I’m contacting you on behalf of the organization La Quadrature du Net to
ask for your signature for an op-ed defending the right to encryption.
In many countries we see that end-to-end encryption is under attack from
legislative and judicial powers, from CSAR regulation in Europe to the
EARN IT project in the US. France is not an exception. Today, we publish
an article (available here
<https://www.laquadrature.net/en/2023/06/05/criminalization-of-encryption-the-8-december-case/>)
revealing an unprecedented police determination to criminalize digital
security practices.
This story takes place in the context of a recent anti-terrorist case in
France. We were outraged to discover that the police and intelligence
services used a significant number of privacy tools and practices as
incriminating evidence to show a so-called “clandestinity” of people
living in a “cult of secrecy”.
In addition to the use of encrypted messaging services (such as Signal),
many practices and tools are also incriminated. Amongst them: services
such as Protonmail to protect email-privacy, the use of Tor or Tails,
services to protect from GAFAM surveillance, possessing technical
documentation or organizing privacy training sessions (cryptoparties).
You can read all about this case here :
https://www.laquadrature.net/en/2023/06/05/criminalization-of-encryption-the-8-december-case/
We are outraged by such an attack on practices necessary to the exercise
of our fundamental rights. This is why we think it is crucial to
mobilize in defense of the right to encryption. We believe it is both
urgent and important to reiterate that encryption of communications is
an indispensable tool in our democratic societies for protecting privacy
from the eyes of state, private or criminal actors.
If you agree to sign this text, please send an email to

we can take this signature into account.
Thank you in advance for your support,
Noémie, for La Quadrature du Net
