hi ~
we've had another borg session today for/with jean
last time the reason for borg backup failing was a changing postgress directory files {in the process of borg running}, which we've solved by excluding it from the backup script
--exclude /var/lib/postgresql/
now we do database dump {pg_dump} of the mastodon database at the beginning of the script and then backup the static dump file
but still borg script kept failing as redis.rdb and log files are also changing during the backup process {we didn't have these issues on adele since we are not hosting anything as `active` as mastodon there}, so went with the similar solution
--exclude /var/log/
&& copied redis dump file inside /tmp and included that file in the backup script
and yet, hold-your-horses, we saw that changes in /home/mastodon/live/public/system/ directory, specifically media attachments directory we causing borg trouble {i suppose someone made a media post while borg was running} and so,
--exclude /home/mastodon/live/public/system/
&& for the testing purposes we have skipped pg_dump action
and soon enough jean emailed us >> `jean backups arrived safely in leverburns server!` <3
/home/mastodon/live/public/system/ is where the following directories live :: accounts cache custom_emojis media_attachments
it currently weighs 181G
./ as previously communicated, as it is an ever-growing directory would be worth devising a policy of how {long} we retain media from {federated instances} on our server; maybe this can be discussed within .` systertown `. mailing list / meetings and then we can have appropriate way to address it technically when it comes to server space and backups.
we also have a few observations to share with systertown `workgroup`
./ we still have a default elephant logo of mastodon; wld be great to swap it with something that reflects systerserver
./ if you go to systerserver.town when you are logged out, by default you are redirected to `explore` page which is displaying 2 posts from the most active members within our federation, which doens't acurately represent our instance. maybe instead of `explore` we cld be landing on `about`/`code of conduct` page
-----------------------------------------------------.+++++++++==
rest of the trajectory remains the same :: once we are done with jean backup todo's, let's restore adele backup situation
_-/ upgrade debian
_-/ install tinc
_-/ install dropbear if it's still possible
we will hear soon from mur.at abt the status of adele backup they are doing.
