Dear Systerserver collaborators,
My name is Floor Berkhout, and I’m a researcher and Information Design master's student at Design Academy Eindhoven exploring feminist approaches to server design and networked infrastructure as part of my thesis, titled Proximity to Progress. My project includes working with server architectures as a practical experiment in challenging centralized, hierarchical computational systems.
I was particularly inspired by how you integrate care and reciprocity into server design. It resonates deeply with my aim to explore servers as sites of disruption—queering traditional power dynamics embedded in computation.
Specifically, I am curious about:
1.
Contributing to Systerserver – I am a student now which puts me in the position of learning and practicing at the same time and I would be interested if there is any way to contribute to the server.
2.
Building upon existing networks of servers / consolidating isolated practices
3.
How you navigate the balance between creating inclusive spaces and maintaining autonomy within the architecture of your servers.
4. Any specific tools, methodologies, or protocols you’ve found useful for designing feminist server environments.
5. Advice for integrating feminist principles into the technical and social layers of a server infrastructure.
I would be incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from your expertise and experience. If you’re open to it, I’d love to connect via email or a short online meeting. Your insights would help me ground my work in lived practices.
Thank you for the work you’ve done in reshaping how I think about servers and networks. I look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
Floor Berkhout
